Canton Fair: The “Green Transformation” Landmark of China’s Industrial Capital

Held every two years in China’s industrial capital, the Canton Fair trade show has always been a large-scale event. As reported by Xinhua News Agency, the fair lasts for about a month, hosting over 32,000 participating exhibitors and welcoming hundreds of thousands of international buyers to Guangzhou, China. This figure does not even account for local residents and tourists visiting the exhibition.

The 20,000 Bottle Cap Robot Symbol and the Green Manufacturing Message

This year’s highlight was a giant robot constructed from 20,800 bottle caps, waving its hand and turning its head at the 136th Canton Fair in Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong Province in Southern China. The installation sparked curiosity and delight among children and adults alike, drawing crowds to check in and take photos. According to Mr. You Dongwei, Design Director at Hongqiao Packaging Company, the objective behind building this robot was to convey a message of a greener lifestyle, as well as product recycling and reuse. The initiative aims to help prevent environmental pollution and promote eco-friendly concepts to young people worldwide.

Furthermore, he noted that the majority of the company’s primary client base comes from the United States, Europe, and Southeast Asia regions that place a high premium on environmental protection and prioritize eco-friendly materials and supply sources. Above all, these clients recognize that accelerating sales requires a commitment to sustainable values.

“Green Certification” – A Vital Passport for Export Enterprises

For modern Chinese enterprises, obtaining green certifications in environmental protection is akin to securing a “safety ticket” in today’s fiercely competitive market. This was also one of the criteria set forth by the fair for participating businesses. This edition of the fair featured numerous booths showcasing international certifications, such as the Global Recycled Standard (GRS), Oeko-Tex Standard 100, and the Business Social Compliance Initiative (BSCI).

Zhejiang Aiyimei Garment Co., Ltd. was among the companies exhibiting products at this event. In an interview, a company representative shared that the business was established in 1979. The vast majority of its clientele accounting for 90% of its total sales volume comes from the EU and Europe, where stringent criteria and high standards compel manufacturers to implement measures that minimize environmental impact. Particularly in manufacturing, goods must meet these strict standards before they can enter the market.

The Cost Optimization Challenge in Sustainable Production

However, applying these criteria to mass production often leads to higher raw material and manufacturing costs. Cost optimization remains a tough challenge that many companies must confront when serving this demanding client base.

Founded in 1999, Guangzhou Aopiya Leather Industry Co., Ltd. transformed from an OEM leather workshop supplying international brands into an enterprise that develops its own proprietary brands. This edition of the fair gathered numerous participating brands, including BAGCO and SUSEN names that have already established significant market shares in Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia.

Technological Innovation Across the Leather and Apparel Supply Chain

Guangzhou is widely recognized as the hub of handbag manufacturing and the leather industry, with Guangzhou Aopiya being just one of more than 8,800 active enterprises in this sector locally.

At the fair, thousands of businesses across the leather and consumer apparel supply chain showcased unique products, most notably water-based, solvent-free leather materials. Manufactured through processes that minimize pollution and harmful emissions, these products attracted considerable interest from international buyers, underscoring the fair’s success, scale, and expanding influence.

A representative from Guangzhou Aushan Viviin Co., Ltd. remarked: “Eco-friendly products have become essential for companies doing business in the US and EU markets. Thanks to continuous innovation and quality enhancement, we maintain a pioneering position in this field.”

Canton Fair Reaffirms Position with Record Transaction Volumes

Compared to previous editions held in recent years, the 140th Canton Fair saw an increase of over 1.04 million eco-friendly products on display, representing a growth of more than 130%.

As a long-standing international trade event held biennially, the Canton Fair continues to be warmly received due to its meaningful purpose and objectives, offering the global community a clear reflection of China’s modern manufacturing landscape.

The total projected export transaction value for the fair reached $24.95 billion, reflecting a 1% increase over the previous session.
